TEAM OREGON BACKGROUND

TEAM OREGON is Oregon's state motorcycle safety training program. Our mission is: To foster and promote safe and responsible motorcycle operation through quality rider education programs and public information campaigns.

TEAM OREGON was formed in 1984 to help combat the rising number of motorcycle related accidents and deaths with the help of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on M/C Safety and support from BikePac and ABATE of Oregon.

Funding comes from Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) through endorsement fees ($14 for a 4-year license) and student enrollment fees. We are funded entirely by motorcyclists for motorcyclists!  ODOT contracts with Oregon State University to provide facilities and personnel to run the program.

Since the birth of our program fatalities in the state have dropped approximately 65% and reported accidents have deceased over 80%! Although we can’t say we are responsible for that trend, we feel we have made an impact.  As an example: People under the age of 21 are required to take training from TEAM OREGON in order to obtain an endorsement on their license. Since that law was put into effect fatalities in the under 21 age group have declined.

By the end of 2008 TEAM OREGON had trained over 86,000 people, all in groups of 10-12 students!

We have 22 training locations across the state. The largest communities (Portland, Salem, Albany/Corvallis and Eugene) are served by their respective community colleges, which provide facilities for training. Each site is completely self-contained with materials and equipment. In all remaining training locations, with a few exceptions, materials and equipment are delivered to the community for each class. This is called the Mobile Program."

The Mobile Program uses classrooms and ranges that have been pre-approved for use by TEAM OREGON and the facility owner. Instructors travel to the location to provide training using one of three mobile units that consist of a truck and trailer. The trailer contains everything an instructor would need to teach a course:  A/V equipment, books, helmets, motorcycles, etc.  Typically, one of the instructors delivers the equipment to the training site. Instructors involved in a mobile course are provided lodging in the training community and reimbursed for mileage (if traveling in/on their own vehicle) and meals (per diem).
