Riding
legally in Oregon
Motorcycle riders are required to have a valid
motorcycle endorsement on their license in the state of Oregon. You
must have a valid driver's license to be eligible for an endorsement.
There are two ways you can go about obtaining your endorsement: 1) go
straight to DMV and take the endorsement test there, or 2) complete
the Basic Rider Training Course (BRT)
and bypass the DMV testing. Keep reading for details:
Professional
training
The best
option is to complete the
Basic Rider
Training Course (BRT)
offered by TEAM OREGON. Statistics show that 90% of accidents involved
motorcyclists are self-taught or have learned from family or friends.
DMV will waive both the knowledge and on-cycle testing for your
endorsement if you have an BRT completion card issued by TEAM OREGON.
Please note that the completion card is NOT an endorsement, and you will
still be required to go to the DMV to have the endorsement put on your
license.
Taking
the endorsement test at DMV
To earn your license, you must pass a knowledge
test and an on-cycle skill test. Knowledge test questions are based
on information, practices and theory from the Oregon Motorcycle and
Moped Operator's Manual (MOM). You can review the MOM at this link:
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/driverid/driver_manuals.shtml#motorcycle
Basic vehicle control and collision-avoidance skills are included in
on-cycle tests to determine your ability to handle normal and hazardous
traffic situations. Basic testing requirements include:
* Pass a vision screening, road sign recognition test,
and a motorcycle operator knowledge test.
* Be able to identify the major equipment on your motorcycle
* Show your ability to perform a serpentine maneuver, go through the
gears while in motion, and show your ability to brake and swerve
* Pay a $77 fee for the motorcycle endorsement ($28 of this fee goes
to fund TEAM OREGON).
On-cycle tests are frequently given
on an appointment only basis and only on certain days. Check with your
local DMV office to determine if you need an appointment. If you are
under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application. If you are
under 21, Oregon law requires that you complete a Basic Rider Training
Course before becoming eligible for a motorcycle endorsement.
Motorcycle
instruction permit
If you have an Oregon Driver license, you may get a motorcycle
instruction permit. (Please contact your nearest DMV for current fees
for permits and endorsements.) You will be required to take the knowledge
test at DMV in order to receive a permit. The permit is valid for 1
year, and must be carried with your driver license. You will be allowed
to ride with the following restrictions:
* Riding during
daylight hours only
* You must be observed by someone (on another motorcycle) who has a license
endorsed for motorcycle operation and who is at least 21 years old.
* You cannot carry a passenger
* You should learn how to balance and control a motorcycle off the street.
